For 12 months from the beginning of April 2020 and through lockdown more guitarists chose to play music by Bach than by any other composer. He fought off all contenders for the top spot on Zoomed Guitars Live easily dispatching the likes of Barrios, Brouwer, and Albeniz. Movements from Bach’s partitas, sonatas and suites for violin and cello featured in most Monday sessions. Favourites like Tarrega struggled to make an impression while JS was represented by nearly twice as many pieces as his nearest rival.

That is, until now.

From April to July this year something happened and it all changed. I don’t know why. Spring was in the air and maybe players wanted to move on from the old man’s meditative tones. In a season of renewal Bach was so…2020. OK, 1720. Whatever the reason, in the race to the top both Villa-Lobos and Barrios have left him standing at the starting blocks.

But you know what I think? Bach will be back, sprinting in baggy shorts up the inside lane to the strains of a Brandenburg Concerto. And soon. You wait and see.
