1793 and all that

THE FRIDAY BLOG

Did you know that 1793 was a special year for guitar players as well as Louis XVI, King of France? I can tell you why because I have been preparing for the Morelia International Guitar Festival Mexico online in which I will be talking about early guitar concertos. 1793 is remembered because King Louis lost his head in the French Revolution. Meanwhile round the corner a guitarist composer called Vidal published his own guitar concerto from his Music and Strings shop in Paris’ Rue St Honoré. It is the earliest such work we know of. Guitar life went on, it seems, surrounded by turmoil. By the way, Paganini gave his debut in Genoa that year too. He was 11 years old.
